In our previous blogs, we explained differences of each month in the first year of a new born baby. The reason for that is that the progress is much faster in the first year, and the difference can be seen every month. However, when babies grow up, stages of their cognitive development is much longer compare to the first year.
There are cognitive development stages for children between 1-6 years old;
13th – 15th Months;
- Language development gets faster and ability to understand increases.
- Starts to make more meaningful noises
- Knows names of animals and people, can point people or animals when asked
- Can find asked object among many others
- Can recognize parts of face or body
- Can express desires with noises
16th – 18th Month;
- Duration of attention eye-hand coordination is developed. Can put cubes on top of each other or look at the pictures for a while.
- Mimics adults about eating, drinking, washing hands.
- Knows animal voices.
- Knows parts of the face and body
- Talks for a long time, there are some right words among noises.
- Sings some parts of songs
19th – 21st Month;
- Symbolic games begin. Spoon can be turned into telephone, bowls into drums.
- Starts to say “no”
- Curiosity increases, starts asking constantly; “what is it ?”
- Can fulfil basic instructions consist of 1-2 words.
- Can build sentences with 2-3 words.
2nd Year;
- Knows the places of objects at home
- Knows more words
- Can keep 2 instructions in mind and fulfil
- Starts to create solutions
- Can name body parts
3rd Year;
- Imitates what they see in daily life
- Can tell small stories
- Knows colours, opposite terms
- Can start grouping objects according to their properties
- Can count until 10
- Can fulfil basic needs alone
- Knows own name- surname and age
4th Year;
- Can tell long stories
- Tells own opinions
- Starts to make judgement
- Can tell events chronically
- Can make small puzzles
- Compares former information with new ones and thinks about problem solving
5th Year;
- Can build relationship between events
- Learns the concept of “time”
- Ability to abstract thinking develops
- Can observe something with details
- Can start to learn traffic rules
- Can take small responsibilities
- Understands own characters better, can answer questions like “favourite meal or color”
6th Year;
- Learns the seasons
- Can make simple math
- Can learn left – right
- Can express feelings by writing or drawing
- Can talk about a movie or a book
- Can take small responsibilities at home.
